| Case Study #1: The New Jersey Transit Light Rail Comes to Jersey City. Debate raged over which route the system should followthrough the center of the downtown area or along the Hudson River. Community groups and union officials shared concerns about the central routeresidents worried about safety and congestion, the unions about fewer jobs being created. Favoring the river route, both sides contacted Jones & Associates Communications to pursue their agenda. Objective: To gain greater public support for the Hudson River route and to convince state government officials that the route was the best. Action Taken: A.) We researched and discovered facts that were supportive to our case. B.) We developed a team of local community groups and businesses to work together in this effort. C.) We contacted the tri-state media to convey our message. D.) We developed visuals for the media that supported our position, (like superimposing the image of a light rail train onto a photo of a narrow, congested Jersey City street). This proved to be a most convincing way of communicating our points on safety to the community. Results: The route closer to the Hudson River was chosen. |
